It`s been 2 years since StarCraft: Wings Of Liberty has been released and those of you that have been waiting and wanting more can rejoice. Blizzard has just released StarCraft: Heart Of The Swarm for your gaming pleasure.

Prices for the Heart Of The Swarm expansion start at $39.99 but if you`re a diehard then you can pick up the collector`s edition for $79.99. What do you get with the collector`s edition you ask? The Collector's Edition includes a behind the scenes Blu-ray and DVD two disc making of, the soundtrack, and a 144-page art book, not bad for the true fan of the StarCraft series.

From Blizzard:

With only two days left until Samsung officially unveils the new Galaxy S IV leaks are bound to happen, but is this the real deal?

This is purported to be a video of the China Unicom version of the Galaxy S IV, it looks like it runs TouchWiz, the dimensions seem to be right but as we all know this wouldn`t be the first time a knockoff phone made it to market before the real deal.

well if this REALLY is it i`m reminded of a Samsung commercial last year where a guy lined up to buy an iphone was quoted as saying "but how will they know I upgraded?"
The new AMD Richland processors are a refresh of the Trinity CPUs released around 11 months ago.
AMD has adopted Intel`s "tick-tock" releasing schedule so this being a "tock" release expect minor refinements as opposed to a new architecture. Expect Richland to be around 10% faster than Piledriver CPUs with the GPU being around 4-7% faster as well.

ExtremeTech reports:

"What is Richland? At the end of the day, even after counting the software and hardware changes, Richland is a minor update to a product family that’s far behind Intel in everything but graphics workloads. Real-world performance boosts of 5-6% aren’t game-changers, and the battery life improvements aren’t going to sell laptops on their own, even if the 720p change holds up under independent scrutiny."

a minor speed bump for sure but that does not mean there`s anything wrong with this processor. performance gains, even minor ones are welcome keeping in line with the same TDP and prices. with Kaveri being released later this year we`ll have to see if AMD has anyting new and interesting up their sleeve.

The Philips Hue is an interesting WI-FI connected lighting system of standard looking light bulbs. Making use of a smartphone or tablet the Hue lightning system allows you to play with tone, brightness and colour to create your ideal lighting and mood as well as turn lights on and off remotely. Well now there`s a developers kit for them.

TechCrunch reports:

'Philips recognized that devs wanted to do different things with the Hue, and decided to help them out, by opening up an official developer program, complete with an SDK for iOS developers, and APIs that allow both software and hardware makers to take advantage of the Hue’s connected features. The official tool means that developers can depend on it as a stable channel through which to build Hue integration into their products.

Hue uses the ZigBee standard for home automation, which means that they can talk to each other, as well as motion detectors, connected thermostats, connected appliances and more. The new developer program will mean that hardware makers using these standards can build in Hue-compatible features, so that the lights can be triggered by various actions. You could have a specific light recipe come on whenever you open the door, for instance, or when a thermostat is set to specific climate setting.

Other potential uses of the developer tools include apps for amateur and professional photographers, which could help them optimize lighting for a shoot with a simple app attached to a device with light level detection capabilities. Philips also plans to release future features around geo-fencing, scheduling and other smartphone sensor capabilities that could expand what developers can do with them."
Very interesting 3D concept display here that`s rotatable and could be of great use to engineers and designers. It uses a prism and four images to create this 3D effect, now add gesture control and voila, one very cool almost holographic display.
Using threejs I created a 3D scene and rendered for unique camera angles to reflect off of 1/16" plexi. It creates the illusion of a 3Dimensional volumetric display in it's most crude state. I also attached my leap motion to start controlling the globe with a simple point of the finger.
Microsoft`s Kinect is a pretty cool device. Gamers and developers love it along with hobbyists and experimenters everywhere. But Microsoft has added some new tricks to Kinect, namely pinch to zoom in thin air.

From Microsoft Research:

"One promising direction in the evolution of Kinect for Windows is enabling hand-gesture recognition. A machine-learning project uses a large, varied set of images of people's hands to train Kinect to determine if a hand is open or closed. This enables the development of a handgrip detector, which could launch another step forward in natural user interfaces."
But the new Atom CE5300 System on a Chip is aimed squarely at the home storage market and allows "customers to easily set up all of their media in one place and avoid capacity limitations of mobile devices." This new dual core processor is capable of transcoding and adapting video content to suit a number of devices you may have. Think of an HD video streaming at 1080p to a TV, then converting to 720p for a tablet, and maybe even 480p (blah) for a smartphone for optimal viewing and storage.
From Intel:

"Consumers will have even more options for their TVs whether it’s a flat panel, HDTV, 3DTV or the newest OLED TV, when service providers use the Intel® Atom™ CE5300 Media Processor (codenamed Berryville) in their set-top boxes, announced today at IPTV World Forum in London by Intel’s Service Provider Division.
What’s a Media Processor?
It’s the brains in a set-top box that seamlessly combines the Internet with TV. It means that Intel and service providers are all working to bring you an easy-to-use interface, 3D graphics capabilities, improved search, and of course, downloadable apps and games for your various digital TVs.
Imagine not crowding around a PC to video chat. Instead, this new chip from Intel will enable you to video conference with friends and family from your big screen TV in the living room. You’ll be able to show your girlfriends your new dance moves without having to worry about getting your laptop camera aimed properly.
Also imagine a great new 3D user interface and console-level graphics for gaming with this high performance chip in set-top boxes."
As always these are just rumours but the alleged release schedule is well within Apple`s current timeline for releasing new products.

iMore reports:

"Sources familiar with the plans have told iMore that the iPhone 5S does indeed have the same basic design as the iPhone 5, with a more advanced processor and an improved camera. With the iPhone 5, Apple reduced the thinness of the casing but managed to keep essentially the same, if not slightly better, overall quality. Given the dimensions, or lack-thereof, that in-and-of itself was a feat of engineering. With the iPhone 5S, the aim is to once again raise the bar in terms of iPhone optics, including a much better camera in essentially the same casing. No huge surprises there, given the past history of S-class iPhones.

We've also been told an April-ish launch is getting serious consideration for the next-generation iPads, but we're really not sure what to make of that yet. iPad 5 casings have already begun to leak -- the only big redesign in the line -- so that could make sense. Retina for the iPad mini, however, still doesn't sound imminent."

as always these are just rumours so hence the disclaimer, but these ones sound about right, no big surprises here. as usually Apple is remarkably silent on the matter of new hardware releases.
This update addresses a number of issues including battery life. The update is 150MB in size and is available over the air and also includes over 60 optimizations.

From BlackBerry:

3rd Party App Performance
We’ve improved performance for 3rd party applications, so developers can build apps that run fast and smooth for you. With this update, you might want to keep an eye out for some fresh new app launches in March, like WhatsApp.

Phone, Calendar, and Contacts
Among the top improvements and features are fixes for Gmail calendars on BlackBerry 10. You’ll also find improvements in the BlackBerry Hub for logging calls log and how conversations are handled. We’ve also made general improvements to importing contacts from online sources.

Camera
We’ve optimized the camera for better photos in low-light situations. You’ll love the difference this makes for photos where you don’t use a flash – like the Time Shift Camera feature.

Browser and Media
With more and more of you using the gorgeous screen on the BlackBerry Z10 to consume online videos and media, we’ve made a number of improvements to the software in the way the browser handles video playback to provide a fantastic experience.

Battery Life
The software team has included a number of battery life optimizations with over 60 battery saving improvements since launch to keep you moving. These combined improvements are designed so that you see improvements in battery life and heavy users especially should see a longer average usage per charge cycle.

pretty easy to update your Z10 just go to Settings> Software Updates> Check for Updates> and follow the onscreen instructions
Overclockers at Canada's biggest LAN party have pushed an AMD FX 8350 past 8Ghz (8027MHz). This was achieved using some extreme voltage and cooing (duh!) Pretty fast!

From TweakTown:

"The feat was achieved with an ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z, Corsair Dominator GTX3 memory, Corsair AX850i PSU, and Ryba LN2 pot. Achieving a max speed of 8027.93MHz required 1.968 volts through the core and a multiplier of 31.5 and bus clock of 254.86MHz. Of course, only 2 cores and threads were active for the run."

just a bit over 8Ghz, it was actually 8027Mhz, still that`s quite the overclock
According the report the Germans plan to acquire 5000 Z10`s for use in “other secret sources in ministries and federal agencies” due to its impressive security features.

Crackberry reports:

"It's reported that the Düsseldorf Secusmart security specialist and T-Systems have secured the deal via the Procurement Office of the Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for all communication for the German government. Clearly BlackBerry has always been renowned for offering the most secure mobile data solution and with the recent launch of BlackBerry 10 it looks like that isn't going to change anytime soon.

In addition to the Secusmart software on board the German Z10's - users will also benefit from BlackBerry Balance which will give them the freedom to still use applications of their choice, such as Facebook and Twitter, but with the I.T. department still having full control over the top secret stuff. This could maybe be the perfect example of how the partition between work and personal apps is utilised with BlackBerry Balance."

great news for BlackBerry, this is exactly the type of high profile client acquisition news they need.
The iWatch in its current prototype state allegedly runs a full version of IOS but there`s a problem, battery life is an issue.

From The Verge:

"That's apparently leading to battery life issues in development, according to our sources: the goal is to last at least 4-5 days between charges, but the current watch prototypes are apparently only going for a couple days max. We're also told Apple has some work to do with iOS on the iPhone, which currently has several hooks for supporting a watch-like device but lacks the appropriate interface or settings to make it work properly."

considering Apple (not surprisingly) does not generally comment on products that are still in development this isn`t a shocker. if (or when) Apple does release an iWatch i`m sure a lot these problems will be addressed in one way or another. i`m just hoping this isn`t another fancy bluetooth enabled wrist display for your smartphone, there just has to be more to it for me to jump on this, time will tell.
But that doesn`t stop people speculating what this new device will have or in this case someone with an alleged prototype posting its specs online.

So these are the alleged specs of the new Galaxy S4:

"8-core" Exynos 5410 (probably a 4+4 bigLITTLE design) 1.8GHz clock speed
PowerVR SGX 544 graphics processor
2GB of RAM onboard
13 megapixel camera
4.99″ display 1920×1080
Android 4.2

though possible I`d take these specs with a grain of salt, either way all will be revealed next week
What they found is pretty interesting, the lightning adapter is way more complicated than previously thought. Panic has found an ARM chip along with 2GB of ram and it looks as though it runs some sort of mini IOS.

From Panic blog:

"There’s a lot more going on in this adapter than we expected: indeed, we think the Lightning Digital AV Adapter outputs video by using AirPlay (or similar MPEG streaming). Are we off base? Let us know!
There are a lot of questions. What OS does it boot? @jmreid thinks the adapter copies over a “mini iOS” (!) from the device and boots it in a few seconds every time it’s connected, which would explain the fairly lengthy startup time for video out. Why do this crazy thing at all? All we can figure is that the small number of Lightning pins prevented them from doing raw HDMI period, and the elegance of the adapter trumped the need for traditional video out, so someone had to think seriously out of the box. Or maybe they want get as much functionality out of the iPad as possible to reduce cost and complexity. UPDATE: Another floated theory: efficient HDCP enforcement.
The bad news? By streaming internally, the quality is poor, and it’s not 1080p. We long for raw, untouched HDMI-out.
The good news? If someone complains that this insignificant plug costs $50, tell them it’s a tiny computer!"
Really nice and detailed performance review of an overclocked AMD FX-4300 quad core CPU. As always Nicolas11x12 offers up great details and is very thorough in his testing. Some surprising results for this budget FX CPU. Highly recommended if you plan on overclocking this processor.1AUhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10293693794722763292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6029855117977647197.post-5159233043854473302013-03-01T17:37:00.000-05:002013-03-01T17:40:33.708-05:00Judge reduces jury award in Apple vs Samsung case
On Friday Judge Lucy Koh of the federal court in northern California reduced the award Apple won by $450.5 million in the Apple vs Samsung case and ordered a new trial on damages, that`s a 40% reduction if you`re keeping score.

The Wall Street Journal reports:

"When a Court detects an error in the jury's damages verdict, the Court has two choices: the Court may order a new trial on damages, or the Court may reduce the award to a supportable amount," Judge Koh wrote in her order.

"An Apple spokesman declined to comment; a Samsung spokesman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The move is another setback for Apple, which has locked horns with Samsung in courtrooms around the world for nearly two years. The battle has been a flash point for the technology industry. Many large rivals, such as Google Inc.'s GOOG +0.62% Motorola MSI -0.29% device unit, Microsoft Corp. MSFT +0.54% and others have filed cases against one another covering issues ranging from patents for wireless technology to disagreements over a trademark for the term "App Store."

In August last year, Apple was handed a $1 billion victory in its case against Samsung in a California courtroom when a jury said Samsung's devices had infringed six patents. The decision marked one of the largest patent awards in history."

that`s quite the reduction, but $599 million is nothing to sneeze at either, just the beginning more to come i`m sure
This catalog of free lectures can have an enrollment of up to 250000 on some of it`s more popular courses.

From Forbes:

"iTunes U is available in 30 countries and houses lectures from 1,200 universities and colleges, as well as 1,200 k-12 schools. It’s been picking up steam as online education in general gains acceptance, and, as AllThings D points out, as Apple sells more and more iPads to educational institutions. Personally, I use them on long drives – a good history lecture beats an e-book any day.

iTunes U is a quietly revolutionary technology from Apple. It lacks the shine of a new iPhone or the promise of untold billions in revenue, but it could genuinely be reshaping the way we think about education. I paid a whole lot of money for that civil war class the first time I took it – the second time, however, I did it through iTunes U for free, and probably paid more attention. The same goes for anyone else that may have wanted to take that class, or any others. That’s breaking down barriers in the best way. It not only makes ivory tower education available on a grand scale, it encourages people to keep up learning in small doses throughout their lives."
The Rt. Hon. Professor Sir Robin Jacob had the crazy idea of publicly shaming Apple by making them post a public apology to Samsung on their web site. Well he now works for Samsung as a patent expert in Samsung`s court battle against Ericsson. Even though it does not break any rules you got admit it just looks dirty.

FOSSpatents reports:

"The judge who gave the first opinion for the appeals court (as you can see at the start of the published decision) was The Rt. Hon. Professor Sir Robin Jacob. As Wikipedia explains, he "retired from the Court of Appeal in March 2011" to become a professor, but under Section 9 of the Senior Courts Act 1981, ex-judges can still be invited to sit on the bench. On that basis, Sir Robin Jacob handled the Samsung v. Apple case that made headline news around the world because it appeared that Apple filed frivolous lawsuits (which is not true). In a ruling on Apple's first attempt to comply with the publicity order, Sir Robin Jacob even noted a "lack of integrity"."
So in essence you won`t have interplay between Playstation Network and Battle.net which means no interplay between the platforms. The interesting thing though is PS3/4 players of Diablo 3 won`t always need to be connected to play either.

From Blizzard`s Diablo 3 forum:

"While we think cross-platform play would be awesome, there are currently no plans to allow connectivity between PlayStation Network and Battle.net (this is pretty standard for most games that have PC and console support). As a result, the characters on your Battle.net account and PlayStation account will also remain separate.

In terms of allowing an analog controller hookup for the PC, we don’t have any plans for that kind of support right now. Similarly, since Diablo III for console was designed with a controller in mind, the PlayStation version of Diablo III will not support USB mice or keyboards."

apparently the Playstation 3 version is "much further along than the Playstation 4 version, no released date has been announced just yet
